Ingredients
Scale
- For the Pretzel Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water (110°F)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling)
- For the Filling:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- For Topping:
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and knead until a smooth dough forms (about 5-7 minutes).
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Meanwhile, cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, seasoning with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until browned (about 8-10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
- Once the dough has risen, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and place a spoonful of the beef mixture and a small amount of cheese in the center.
- Wrap the dough around the filling, sealing it tightly, and shape into a ball.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel bomb for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush each bomb with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
Notes
- Make-ahead: Prepare the filling and dough a day in advance and refrigerate. Assemble and bake when ready to serve.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
- Substitutions: Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option, or swap cheddar for your favorite cheese.
