Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before the next.
- Add in buttermilk, vanilla, and food coloring, mixing until combined.
- Fold in the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost liberally with cream cheese frosting when cooled.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding orange or almond extract. Avoid overmixing to prevent a tough cake.
