Instructions

  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before the next.
  5. Add in buttermilk, vanilla, and food coloring, mixing until combined.
  6. Fold in the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Frost liberally with cream cheese frosting when cooled.
