Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried fruit (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and spices.
  3. Add the cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the heavy cream and orange zest until just combined.
  5. If using, fold in the chopped dried fruit.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
  7. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick and cut into wedges.
  8. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter scone, add more sugar to the dough.
  • These scones are best served warm.
