- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp red food coloring
- Filling:

- Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add melted butter, egg, red food coloring, cocoa powder, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12×18 inches).
- Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Roll the dough tightly and cut into 12 equal pieces. Place in a greased baking dish.
- Let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly.
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar and vanilla. Spread over warm rolls.
Notes
- Make-ahead: Prepare the rolls up to the second rise, cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight. Allow to come to room temperature before baking.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Substitutions: Use almond milk for a dairy-free option or coconut oil instead of butter for a vegan version.
