- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy.
- Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while beating on high speed until stiff peaks form and the mixture is glossy.
- Mix in the vanilla and almond extracts.
- Transfer the meringue to a piping bag fitted with a bone-shaped tip.
- Pipe the meringue onto the prepared baking sheet in the shape of bones.
- Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the meringues are dry and can easily be lifted off the parchment paper.
- Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool completely inside the oven.
- Once cooled, decorate with edible black gel or chocolate to create spooky eyes or other designs.
