- 2 lbs Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, for greasing
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease your baking dish generously with butter.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish, making sure to overlap them slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, minced garlic, chopped thyme, salt, and pepper. Whisk until well-mixed, then pour half of this mixture over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle half of the shredded Gruyère cheese on top.
- Repeat the process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and Gruyère cheese.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and potatoes are tender.
- Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Make-ahead tips: Prepare this gratin a day in advance and refrigerate it before baking. This dish can also be made in an air fryer for a quicker version.
